Maynard Smith

Creating and enjoying art has been a passion of mine since I was very young.  A former classmate from second grade once told me that when we were kids, before going to recess, all the children in class would line up to look at the intricate pencil drawings that I had drawn on my desk.  In high school and college I drew cartoons for the school papers.  Cartooning, sculpting, illustration and character design have been some of the types of visual arts that I’ve worked in.  And more recently, I’ve been painting colorful acrylic abstract designs.

Professionally trained as a voice-over artist, I’ve written and performed radio commercials in Hawaii, and for many years I’ve had the pleasure of entertaining guests with ad-lib storytelling at a well-known theme park in Anaheim California.

In my abstract paintings, I like to build layers of paint to create a sense of depth, somewhat like a three-dimensional sculpture.  Some people, including myself, use a magnifying glass to see the intricate varieties of texture and color.
