ARTISANS

Rik Phillips was born in Boston, MA. At fourteen, he won his first art award. This launched his forty year art career. At seventeen, he won a scholarship to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and later went on to the University of MA to receive his Bachelors Degree in Education.

      In 1973, Rik taught Three Dimensional Design and Conceptual Art  at  the Montserrat School of Visual Arts in Beverly, MA.

      In 1975, he started to exhibit his sculptures all over the New England area. The highlight of this period was a summer spent with the famous sculptor, Alexander Caulder. Rik Phillips was soon exhibiting his works with the likes of Miro and Chagall and, his work began appearing in galleries across the country.

      In 1978, Rik left the city of Boston and moved to North Conway, New Hampshire. He taught art in S.A.U. #9, introducing new art classes in the school system. Always working and exhibiting, his work found its way into many private collections. Some of the more famous collectors are Barbara Streisand, Armand Hammer, and the Boston Children's Museum. In 1994 the large metal sculpture "IO" was chosen as a "State Treasure"'" by the state of New Hampshire. Other credentials include magazine articles and appearances on television: articles in Better Homes and Garden, Yankee,and Snow Country magazines,appearances on Evening Magazine (Boston), Good morning, and people, Places, and Things (Portland, ME).

      In 1994, Mr. Phillips moved to the island of Kauai, Hawaii.He resided there 10 years. In that time Rik exhibited his sculptures in a one man show at the Kauai Museum as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art on Oahu, HI. He also had numerous one man shows at the Kinipopo GaIlery in Kapaa, Kauai.      

      ln 2004 to 2006 Rik Phillips lived on the California coast at Avila Beach and the San Luis Obispo area. While there he had a one man show at the Steynberg Gallery, SLO Art Center, Chris Sorensen Gallery in Fresno, and the Fig Tree Gallery in Fresno. 

      In December of 2007, Rik and his wife moved to Palm Springs, CA. He exhibited in the      Palm Springs Art Museum in 2008-2012. He was represented by Christopher Anthony Gallery, the Savage Archdeacon Gallery, and the Shawn Savage Gallery in Palm Springs on North Palm Canyon.

      Rik has expanded his love for design and is creating one-of-a-kind bracelets that can be purchased at the museum store at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

       For the past two years Rik has designed and created the Steve Chase Awards for the Desert Aids Project in Palm Springs.

      Rik Phillips is currently working on a line of contemporary wood furniture.
